Nizam's African Cavalry Guards

by HH » Wed Mar 30, 2005 8:20 pm

Nizam's African Cavalry Guards - "AC Guards"

Image

"Nothing African is left - no music, no clothes; everything is Indian" - Mahmud bin Farzullah

Mahmud bin Farzullah believes he is at least 100 years old and has South African ancestry.

He was a guard for the seventh and last Nizam, who lost his powers in 1948 when India, with great violence, took over Hyderabad.

"I used to ride horses, do horse-jumping and the daily parade," he told me.

"I was also part of the contingent that used to greet the Nizam on his birthday and present him with gifts."

The last Nizam was extremely eccentric, but for Mahmud, "he was a great person. He really loved his people."

The memories are equally vivid for a non-Sidi I met - Mir Moazam Hussein, now nearly 90.

As a member of Hyderabad's old nobility, he and his cousin, as young boys, used to sit under the Nizam's balcony on the royal birthday for a prime view of the AC Guards.

"They were the most brilliantly-attired, uniformed men; the men did justice to the uniform - they were great big dark-skinned men, you know. And so were their horses!" said Mir Moazam.

He has sweet memories of the AC Guards playing the military band, and of some of them coming to his boyhood palace selling duck and snipe which they had shot on Hyderabad's lakes.

The palace had a staff of hundreds, including Sidi women, the female relatives of the guards, who would check in visitors.
...

Mohammed, who is in his 70s, is one of Hyderabad's Sidis - a community of people of African descent.

While some of India's Sidis came as slaves, this southern city's community has its roots in a troop of guards recruited to serve the Nizams - the old Muslim dynasty of this one-time princely state.

The story goes that in the 19th century, the 6th Nizam got word of Africans serving in the court of another Indian nobleman.

Impressed by their qualities, he asked for a batch of Africans to be brought to Hyderabad. A group of around 300 soon followed.

Most accounts suggest they came from Africa voluntarily.

They included Mohammed's grandfather.

"My grandfather came from British Somaliland, from Hargeisa. My father was born here," he told me.

Showing me some family photos, Mohammed pointed out his maternal grandfather and uncle, both of them in the Nizam's African Cavalry Guards or "AC Guards".

Image

Hyderabad's AC Guards district still has a distinctly Muslim feel

The military staff also included Arabs, but the Nizams had wanted Africans as bodyguards "because they are loyal, and physically good", he told me.

Also pictured are a number of Ethiopian Christians.

The part of Hyderabad where most Sidis live today is known simply as AC Guards.

It has a pronounced Muslim feel to it, centred as it is around an old mosque; Muslim businesses including beef butchers line the lanes.

But also in the neighbourhood is a large church - St Mary's.

In these streets, most people you see are not Sidis. But some of the local Sidis are highly venerated.

Hyderabadi Maharashtrians

Image

Marathi Grantha Sangrahalaya

The three-lakh strong Maharashtrian population and the floating computer specialists reaching Cyberabad from Maharashtra look to MGS as their link with the far away Marathi literature and culture. Housed in an impressive two-storeyed building, the MGS makes you forget the din and bustle of the busy Koti road. To the right of the entrance is the Reference Room. In the free Reading Room, where silence reigns supreme, members are busy browsing through newspapers, magazines and books. The efficient staff of this first-ever-computerized library can access in a jiffy any of its 20,000 titles.

New books, at least 10, are added to the collection every Tuesday. Come October/November, you can treat yourself to the special Diwali issues of the countless Marathi magazines. This spacious and sparsely but tastefully decorated library is a meeting place for Hyderabadi Maharashtrians. Here they revive their Marathi moorings through all sorts of cultural activities round the year. In fact, MGS prides itself on the feeling of familial togetherness amongst its members.

MGS, which boasts of rare books published in and around the 1920s, gave a fillip to the Andhra library movement during the days of its inception. The 1960’s Library Act was fostered by the Library Science classes initially conducted in the MGS premises.

The library, which celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in 1997-98, houses, on the second floor, the Hyderabad chapter of the Marathi Sahitya Parishad which has under its roof very rare manuscripts. MGS has motivated the Library Science studies in Andhra Pradesh, and is run by a body elected by the members. The governing body, in other words, is aware of the needs, hopes and expectations of the membership and welcomes members’ suggestions, which makes it an institution by itself.

Hyderabadi Kannadigas

Hyderabadi Kannadigas

Hyderabadi Kannadigas : Special Sweet

The Hyderabadi Kannadigas may outnumber the Three-Lakh Maharashtrians with their "near nature" and nutritious food habits and may not be distinguished from their Telugu Neighours due to their similar Culture & Tradition. The Hyderabadi Kannadigas' Food is milder in taste than that of the Telugus, perhaps with more coconut in their curries and "huli". Their Dharwad Pedha is Special!

I AM MISSING MY DHARWAD LIKE MY MOTHER & FATHER SINCE 5 YEARS EVERY TIME I VISIT DHARWAD I BRING FAMOUS PEDHAS TO PUNE & DISTRIBUTE HERE THEY REALLY LOVE DHARWAD PEDHA ***** I AM MISSING LOVELY NATURE OF DHARWAD (ALWAYS GREENISH & COOL ATMOSPHERE ) OH! MA I AM REALLY MISSING YOU.

Homely Food : USA

by HH » Mon May 30, 2005 5:10 pm

Homely Food : USA!

Homely Food : USA!

* When A.N. Narayanswami started Komala Vilas in Sunnyvale in 1999 he catered directly to these recent college grads. His restaurant harked back to his IIT-Madras roots. “We set it up like a college mess where you can shout and yell and talk,” says Narayanswami. Komala Vilas even has a college-style message board. You can find announcements about a carom competition and a chess tournament as well as meetings for groups like Asha.

The other thing in Narayanswami’s favor was that he knew many of these new immigrants were strict vegetarians. “I had to face the choice of starvation or had to figure out how to eat at home,” says Narayanswami who came to the U.S. in 1971 to do his MBA. “There were only so many peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches I could eat.” Now he boasts proudly that the 48 items in his buffet, from the kootu to the sambar to the rasam are fresh and 100 percent vegetarian, and taste like they could have been made in a kitchen in Chennai. “After all, my consultant is my mother who stays with me nine months of the year,” says Narayanswami.

**
It’s the memory of mother’s home cooking that is the hallmark and selling point of regional food. Daksha and Suketu Desai stumbled onto the formula by accident. After moving to the Bay Area in 1993-94 from Mumbai and Ahmedabad, they were like many immigrants struggling to make ends meet by working at a shop. To supplement their income they decided to take in a paying guest. One day after a trip to San Francisco they all came home late. Nearby restaurants had all closed down. Daksha Desai rustled up some khichri. Their guest loved it so much, they hit upon the idea of supplying bachelors with roti and sabzi.

“We put it on the Internet and between 1995-1998 we were supplying to many company boys who would phone their orders in the morning and pick it up between 11:30 and 12:30,” remembers Suketu Desai. Soon business was booming and the Desais needed a real commercial kitchen. “We had 50-60 boys coming to lunch every day. It could be a health code problem,” says Desai.

They moved operations to a storefront in a strip mall in Mountain View. DeeDee’s is part restaurant and part grocery store. The tables with their yellow tablecloths are not fancy. The freezer with the srikhand and ice-cream tends to stick. But in keeping with its down home style, the Desais wander among the tables greeting old and new customers and exhorting them to eat.

Now, with a real kitchen the Desais are able to expand their menu. DeeDee’s offers not just Marathi and Gujarati specialties but on some days has a Rajasthani meal or even Kathiawadi food. But though Gujarati-style food served in restaurants like DeeDee’s in Mountain View and Jay Bharat in Artesia is increasingly popular, the front-runners in regional food are still chaats of Viks Chaat House in Berkeley and Dana Bazar in Fremont and the dosas and idlis from places like Komala Vilas and Udupi Palace in Sunnyvale or Woodlands in Artesia.

Annalakshmi Athithi Inn

Annalakshmi Athithi Inn

Annalakshmi Athithi Inn

Annalakshmi Athithi Inn, Ameerpet Hyderabad, Special Feature : the best fruit mocktails in town. All the delicious combinations you can think of are part of the menu here, plus a few that will take you by pleasant surprise.

Like the sweet lime and pomegranate drink, Anarkali, or Rasmadhuri, which is tender-coconut water with lime and honey. Triveni is a mix of grape, pineapple, sweet lime and ginger and specialty-of-the-season Mango Tarang, also has that wicked twist of ginger. Another seasonal favourite Tharboosh is a combo of musk melon, ginger and honey, while the year-round Ginger Pine has the perfect proportions of pineapple and ginger. For a richer treat try Amrit, a mocktail of dry-fruits blended with various spices.

Annalakshmi's fruit juices are special because they contain no sugar - honey is the healthier substitute - and most all of them have ginger, which is excellent for digestion. The restaurant also serves a herbal Ayurvedic drink called Ambrosia, which is good for purifying blood and for overall well-being.

All in all, quite a find in the chaotic Ameerpet area.

Punnami

by HH » Wed Jun 08, 2005 11:39 am

Punnami

Punnami

*Punnami : Next to APTDC Office, Tank Bund Road, Hyderabad ... Punnami is on that curve of the road as you turn from Necklace Road to the Tank-Bund stretch. There's no flashing neon sign announcing its presence, no food festivals to draw in the crowds and no 'lake-view' promised (or provided). Visit it though, and you're in for a pleasant surprise.

Clean, basic and efficient, Punnami makes up for its lack of excitement with something else that mere hoop-la cannot compete with - excellent value for money. The menu is barely three pages long, and but is high on quality and taste.

Andhra dishes here are particularly good, and the favourites are not too spicy (perhaps keeping the foreign tourist in mind, considering Punnami is run by the APTDC). ... If you're vegetarian, try the special thali, which is one of their best-sellers. If you're not in the mood for rice, try their huge and delicious chapathis. Finish off with the double-ka-meeta, which is light and just the right amount of sweet.

Punnami serves a breakfast buffet of puris, idli and upma every morning. So drop in if you want a break from the over-done over-masala-ed joints everywhere else, and all you're looking for is a belly-full of good food served hot. And your wallet won't wince either.
