SIR MOHAMMAD IQBAL : 13 Versions from the Urdu

SIR MOHAMMAD IQBAL : 13 Versions from the Urdu

About the poet: Sir Mohammed Iqbal (1887-1938), who published nine volumes of poetry, continues to inspire millions in South Asia. He advocated ceaseless endeavor, wrote with equal ease in Persian, Urdu, and English. His magnum opus, Javed Nama (addressed to Javed, Iqbal's son), composed in Persian, develops the recurrent theme in Iqbal's work: the potentiality of man, as partner with God, in shaping the destiny of the universe; the poet soars the spheres with Rumi, meeting many icons of history. The reference to Dante's Divine Comedy is obvious. -- Rafiq Kathwari

Himalaya

O Himalaya, tell of that time when man first lay
in your lap. O let me imagine that dawn
unstained by red. Run backward, cycle of
day and night, ancient eras a moment in your lifetime.
You are a poem whose first verse is the sky.
Your bright turbans dazzle the Pleiades.
Lightning across your peaks sends black tents wandering
above the valley. The wind polishes the trembling mirrors
at your hem. Streams cascade down your forehead,
your cheeks quiver. As morning air cradles intoxicated
roses and the leaves are silenced by the rose-gatherer's wrists,
so speech is silenced in the roar of falling water.

Tamanna Meri

by HH » Fri Feb 24, 2006 5:03 pm

Tamanna Meri - Sir Mohammed Iqbal

* Urdu ... Listen :arrow: http://www.interactiveislam.com/html/mo ... heeds/labb pey aati hai dua.ram

* Roman Urdu: - Labh pe aati hai dua ban kay tamanna meri

Labh pe aati hai dua ban kay tamanna meri
zindagi sham ki surat ho khuda ya meri
zindagi sham ki surat ho khuda ya meri
Labh pe aati hai dua ban kay tamanna meri

Neik jo rah ho us reh pe chalana mujhko
mere Allah, burai se bachana mujhko
Neik jo rah ho us reh pe chalana mujhko

* English Translation:

My longing comes to my lips as supplication of mine
O God! May like the candle be the life of mine!

May the world's darkness disappear through the life of mine!
May every place light up with the sparkling light of mine!

May my homeland through me attain elegance
As the garden through flowers attains elegance

May my life like that of the moth be, O Lord!
May I love the lamp of knowledge, O Lord!

May supportive of the poor my life's way be
May loving the old, the suffering my way be

O God! Protect me from the evil ways
Show me the path leading to the good ways

Saqi Nama

by HH » Sun Mar 12, 2006 8:53 pm

Saqi Nama - Sir Mohammed Iqbal

Zamanay kay andaaz badlay gaey
Naya raag hai saaz badlay gaey

Khirad ko ghulami say aazad kar
Jawanon ko peeron ka ustad kar

Jigar say wohi teer phir par kar
Tamanna ko seenon main bedar kar

Jawanon ko sozi jigar bakhsh de
Mera ishq meri nazar bakhsh de

Pila de mujhe woh may pardah soz
Keh aati nahin fasl-e-gul roz roz

Woh may jis say roshan hai zameer-i-hayaat
Woh may jis say hai mastee-e-kainaat

think it through, it is dedicated to the youth...

in this remarkable poem (below is only an excerpt), iqbal wonderfully sends the message to the muslims of india that 'the times are changing' (just like how musical instruments have been altered, saaz badlay gaey). in a sense, he is simply stating that the ottomans are finished, now it is time for the new generation to shine.

in the second verse...i love this one...iqbal tells us to free our minds from slavery (Khirad ko ghulami say aazad kar). he then tells the youth (Jawanon), to assume leadership by becoming the 'ustads' of the gurus (peeron).

Jigar say wohi teer phir par kar. in other words, 'traverse that same arrow in the hearts of the youth'. he ends off the verse by asking allah to revive the desire in hearts of the youth - that same desire/passion that was found during the times of the prophet/islamic empire.

the 4th verse is pretty self explanatory...

the 5th verse is also pretty clear for the average urdu speaking american. may is wine; pardah soz literarily means 'unveils.'

the song concludes by asking the saqi to '(give me) the wine which enlightens the conscience of existence' and 'which makes the universe dynamic.'

the basic translation of the song can be found here  http://www.safdarmirza.com/junoonrox/lyrics/e_saqi.html

... the above is only a brief and rough translation of this great masterpiece.

Pila dey mujhay wo may perda soz
Kay ati nahi fsal gul roz roz

It means intoxicate me with the pain of a modest veil
because a flower is not in its bloom every day.

In other words let me guard my short youth with the veil of modesty.

It by no means says let me have a drink and unveil myself.

Here is one of my favorite extract of Iqbal's Poetry:

Majnoon nay sheher chora, tu Sehraa bhi chor day
Nizaray ki hawas ho tu Laila bhi chor day

Wa'az! kamal-e-tarq se milti hai yaan muraad
Duniya jo chor dii hai to uqbaa bhi chor day

Taqleed ki rawish se tu behtar hai Khud-Kushi
Rasta bhi dhoond, Hizar ka soda bhi chor day

Mannand-e-Khama Teri zuban per hai harf-e-gair
Begana Shay pe Nazish-e-Bejaa bhi chor day

Lutaf-e-Qalaam kya je naa ho dil mein DARD-e-ISHQ
Bismil nahe hai tu to Tarapna bhi chor day

Shabnam ki tarah pholoon pe ro, aur chaman se Chal
Iss Baagh mein Qyaam ka soda bhi chor day

Acha hai dil kay pass rahay pasbanay Aqal
Lakin kabhi kabhi issay tanha bhi chor day

Hai Ashiquee mein rasam alag sab se bethna
But-Khana bhi, Haram bhi, Kaleesa bhi chor day

Hathaan mein hath milake,
Hathaan mein hath milake,
angoothi churake uno chali gayi,

saucer churaake uno chali gayi,
abhi full meals ku aari,

five star mein uno merkoo chunna lagai,
