The Hizbul Mujahideen’s South India chief, Mujeeb Ahmed, was convicted for life and his wife, Zohra Nishad, for 10 years by the first additional metropolitan sessions judge court on Friday.

The public prosecutor, Mr Challa Seshu Reddy, said Mujeeb was convicted for “conspiring to wage war against the nation and for procuring arms to do so.”

He was also convicted for procuring a satellite phone under the Indian Telegraphic Act and for being a member of the banned organisation — the Hizbul Mujahideen — under the Unlawful Prevention Act.

His accomplices — Jahangir Khan, lorry driver Shabbir Ahmed, Ravindra Kumar, lorry owner Mohammed Yaseen and Awad — were convicted to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000 was imposed.

Mujeeb was arrested on December 26, 2005, after a truck from Jammu and Kashmir, which was carrying two AK-47s and ammunition, was caught in Rajasthan.

“The truck’s driver, Shabbir, had confessed that the arms were meant for Ahmed Bhai alias Deccan Bhai, who was later found out to be Mujeeb Ahmed. The police then seized Rs 1.5 lakh in cash, a satellite phone, cellphones, a cheque of Rs 2.9 lakh and seditious literature from the accused,” said Mr Seshu Reddy.

Meanwhile, Mujeeb threw letters at the media personnel present, in which he alleged that an MIM leaders and an Intelligence official had conspired to implicated him in a false case. His wife too claimed that they were booked for not paying bribe. The police called the allegations baseless.

The key witness in the case was Bilal Ahmed Khullu, an former militant. Khullu confirmed that Mujeeb, his wife Zohra Nishad and Awad of Nalgonda had met him for weapons.

Jahangir, Mujeeb’s relative had prepared the seditious CDs and supplied them to attract youths, he revealed. At least 44 witnesses were examined and only one of them turned hostile.

Mujeeb was earlier convicted of the murder of Additional Superintendent of Police, Krishna Prasad, in 1992. He was released on remission on August 15 in 2004 in that case.

Its very hard for anyone to believe the whole story of Mujeed Ahmed. For his first act, one can give benefit of doubts (Judicery also release him); but his subsequent action & involvment doesn't absolve him.
