A New Year's Poem - Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892)

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow;
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.

Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rimes
But ring the fuller minstrel in.

Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.

This poem is Section CVI from Tennyson's famous elegy, In Memoriam, in which he came to terms with his grief over the death of his best friend, Arthur Hallam. As he moved away from his own personal sorrow in the elegy to the wider sorrows and problems of humankind, he came to speak here eloquently of the hope we share at the turning of the year.

A THOUSAND VISIONS - Ann Margetson

Postby HH » Fri Jan 13, 2006 4:38 pm

In my craft I search for the dynamic balance between the crystalline purity of stone and the molten fluidity of metal, captured in jewelry and sculpture rooted in the rich traditions of the metal arts.

While some of my pieces are drawn from the perfection of nature, most unfold from the passions and joy of my own vision.

Within a lexicon of gold, silver, copper and steel, I craft the subtle variations of texture and color into unique shapes augmented by the contrasts and complements of pearls, or precious or semi-precious stones. The vocabulary of this art includes casting, chasing repousse’, hollowware, fabrication, granulation and enameling on electroforms. - Maggie Davidson

A THOUSAND VISIONS - Ann Margetson

A THOUSAND VISIONS
When in the car in winter a thousand visions we see,
Every bend in the road is a new sight of spectacular beauty,
A poets heart and mind cannot rest but must express
The value of nature when in her white gown she does dress.
Even broken fences seem to have a silent beauty of there own,
The lofty snow covered pines lead up to some imaginary throne.
Snow kissed homes with chimney smoke calling, ‘I’m warm’,
Welcoming all the family, ‘come home, be free from harm’.
All the new saplings hidden safe beneath the protecting snow,
A filigree of frost on last years reeds along the hedgerow,
Longing to walk there, follow a path that you do not know,
Yet your senses telling you that it is not safe at all to go.
Just absorb the cold loveliness that surrounds us on a cold day
And remember the thousand visions as the winter slowly dies away.

Forever Is a Metaphor for Now

Postby HH » Wed Jan 18, 2006 8:58 pm

Forever Is a Metaphor for Now

Forever is a metaphor for now,
Imagining the moment shorn of motion,
Finding its analogy in how
The sense of self is separate from the notion.
Years erode us more than we allow.

Fear not, for in poetry is truth.
Our place among the gods remains assured.
Upon the rock of beauty lies the proof
Regarding what of wonder has endured.

This site is now the fun and relaxation zone of workinghumor.com
Once here forget work, friends, family, dog and neighbor's wife

Just Live

Postby HH » Thu Feb 23, 2006 5:06 pm

Just Live

To many times we forget what has been done in the past,
we are told that some memories are not meant to last.
To many times we forgive what has been done,
we are asked why we can't just live life and have fun.

Some people speak their mind while others have theirs spoken,
some of us are the pawns in the game the others just the token.
When will be able to be free to roam and say what we choose,
when will we realize that sometimes it's OK to lose.

Knowledge is power and power is strength, so give me speech,
tell you what I will and won't do, let you realize I to can teach.
Wisdom is the key and the key opens the door, so give me ears,
ask them where I can and can't go, let you see I too have fears.

Physically, mentally and emotionally at unrest,
tempting the thousands and determined to be the best.
Love, stress and pain are a part of life,
problems will always arise so the hell with the stress and strife.

Is Life Fair?

Postby HH » Thu Mar 02, 2006 5:45 pm

Is Life Fair?

"I must hit the hundred crore mark…" Rajiv reminded himself. His son, overhearing him, said, "Whoa Dad, back up a second, did you just say hundred crores?"
"A turnover of hundred crores son, that doesn't mean a hundred crores in my pocket."
"Your dad is way too ambitious. Take it easy Rajiv" Smita, his wife, cautioned him. Gulping down his juice, Rajiv gave his wife a smile, ruffled his son's hair, grabbed his briefcase, and dashed out. A few minutes later, they heard a car roaring out. Smita sighed. Do husbands ever listen?

Ever since that talk with Babaji three years back, Rajiv has been on this 'I-must-get-ahead' race, Smita thought to herself, as she cleared away the breakfast dishes. She had been married into a prosperous Hindu family with a thriving family business. Who knew that ten years down the line the father and son would have a massive disagreement, and the company would break into two parts - each trying to outdo the other?

"How was your day?" Smita asked a tense Rajiv when he came back in the evening. ...

One day, there was a phone call. Smita picked up the phone, "Hello? Hello?"
A teary Maji sobbed into the receiver, "Smita, Smita."
"Maji! Kya hua?"
"Babaji, he..."
"Maji, tell me."
"Babaji, he's had a heart attack..."
"What?"
"We're in AIIMS. Come quick..."

"Rajiv, Rajiv."
"Smita? What? Why are you shouting like that?"
"Babaji's had a heart attack."
The drive to the hospital was filled with screeching tires and tense comments. "It's all my fault" Rajiv berated himself, "I should have known better."
"Rajiv, just drive", Smita said.
They reached the hospital, only to find that Babaji's condition had stabilised and that he was in the ICU.

"Thank God, thank God" Rajiv wept. Maji was in a silent prayer.
"Promise me you'll go and apologise Rajiv. You'll talk to him and say you're sorry. Promise me…" Smita begged.
"Oh Smita, do you think that I could even dream of doing otherwise?" Rajiv moaned.

That evening, Babaji was stable enough for visitors. Rajiv went in and both men had their reconciliation with each other, and God. Babaji hugged Rajiv and said, "Forgive me, Raju. I went senile in my old age."
"Nahin, nahin Babaji, I didn't behave with proper respect. You are my father after all."
Rajiv came out and smiled at Smita, "Things are going to be okay from now on Maji. I promise."

That night, Babaji had an appendicitis attack. He didn't survive the operation.
Who knows what life will throw our way?

The Price of Peace

Postby HH » Wed Mar 29, 2006 8:42 pm

The Price of Peace

I think a lot about Peace, in an objective manner,
and wonder why I won’t march under that banner.
There have been times I’ve been inclined to protest
rampant injustice against those who aren’t blessed.

To be a martyr and barter one’s life against force
is to surrender to those who’ll feel no remorse
because they don’t understand a pacifist’s course.
They’re never going to dismount their high horse.

There will always be ham hawks and mad dogs of war
who’ll seize what they want and then look for more.
Corpses are carrion on which buzzards will feed
and even proud eagles are subjective to greed.

Don’t give up the ghost when you know what is right
for comrades need ardent souls shining bright
over those who tread softly off into the night.
If you’ll die for a cause, then be ready to fight.

Our mortal coil is to voice unalienable gripes.
There’s no stripping spots nor shifting stripes.
We are what we are, have faith and believe
when it comes to war, there’ll be no reprieve
no matter how many wear white on their sleeve.

You're Alive

You're Alive. Do something. The directive in life, the moral imperative ... It could be expressed in single words, not complete sentences. It sounded like this: Look. Listen. Choose. Act.

The poem really share that word which you can't express to a person personally. Enjoy your life as you want.
