Marriage has benefits at various levels:

Personal level:
Advantages: Companionship, support.
Can couples live without getting married? Sure, but then there is no guarantee that one of the partner's leaves or has multiple relations. This causes insecurities and lesser emotional commitment. Emotional fulfillment is primary for happiness and marriage is a pretty good practice for lasting happiness. Marriage is nothing but emotional commitment re-enforced by societal customs and legal provisions.
Of course, unless marriage is approached with the right attitude by both partners, marriage by itself alone cannot assure happiness. Marriage can be drudgery without emotional content.

Societal level:
Stability, reduced competition among males and females and hence more time devoted to productive/recreational/creative activities. Else every male will be fighting each other for females and productivity will be low - science, tech, medicine etc.
Even females will be competing with each other for the dominant male.
This borderline anarchy is not conducive for child rearing or for other pursuits of life.

Marriage enforces certain discipline at personal as well as societal level. Of course, there are disadvantages of marriage too - especially of incompatibility, abuse, coercion etc but in my opinion, even today, marriage is on the whole more beneficial.

It is possible to have close relationships without marrying too but unless all partners are mature, somebody or the other will be hurt or loose out.

There are some people that doesn't consider marriage at all because according to them, it is just a piece of paper and there will be no mutual difference in terms of their love for each other. But as for my personal opinion, to be able to have a home, there should be a marriage in it edifying a new born family.

Yeah, marriage has some benefits, but things are changing these days, and many people are considering marriage as something outdated. And yes piece of paper can only affect some material matters and can't change anything else.

Marriage is important because it hold two people in one thread. Person without marriage is a bird without nest, just like nest is very important for a bird, marriage is also very important for humans. Sure two people can live together without marriage claiming love for each other but there is high possibility for their separation because most of the boyfriend/girlfriend relationships are based on infatuation. When unmarried couple separates from each other they are on their own and they can’t claim from anything from each other. When someone is bond in relationship of marriage they think twice before leaving each other, if separation happens couples can claim almost anything from one another. Also Marriage is needed because child born to marriage couple is consider as legitimate child and the one born to unmarried couple is consider as illegitimate child. Sure Unmarried couple can raise their children without any difficulty but the status for child will always remain the same up until both parents are married to each other. Illegitimate children face many difficulties in life compare to a legitimate child.

Marriage not only builds up a relation between husband and wife, it also build other relations. marriage is not all about having sex and making kids, marriage is about living in comfortable and secure environment while raising your family and growing old with your intimate partner. Marriage puts a stop on a hunt as two people are bond to each other with the status of marriage. Single person is a like a lion in jungle always hunting.

In my opinion, Marriage is a beautiful relationship and everyone should experience once in their lifetime.

Marriage may be a nest for two birds - -

But., at times there could be chances that nest could become a cage - -
if that is happeing divorce will be only way out - -

Your statements r quite a generaliztion to every one - -
I would say marriage must be an option amongst bunch of couples - well, some ppl. r still trying to figure out themselves in a relationship before maturing to marriage -

There could be a situation where the woman in marriage cannot coexist with man's mother at times - in those situations if marriage is made eternal- she will be a victim in the marriage - -

My dear friend, even philosophers could not define what is life!  But I would say that life is to live fullest and let others live, and to live this life, we all need a life partner with whom we can share everything we experience. At your young age you won’t admit the importance of a partner, but as you grow old, you need someone who knows you, who loves you, and the one who understands you, and this is why the institution of marriage has been set up. And yes, women are caring by nature, thus men feel that they show more love than men, it’s nothing else, don’t take it otherwise :?

It depends on why one wants to marry??? security, companionship, sex, having kids, etc.....so it all depends on why , purpose, intent and finally with whom can be decided based on these factors...

Well, it doesn't really mean that you have to get married to somebody that you don't have a feeling to. You need to find somebody who loves, cherish and supports you in everyday life. Fix marriage are a tradition on some other countries (like India) but this relationship tends to just make the couple unhappy. A person have a freedom to choose whatever he/she wanted to, not force him/her to do it :)

In my opinion marriage is not a necessary thing. We can live without marrying any one. But our society believe that marriage is a part of our life. This thought must be changed. all the people have right to live his own life, no any society has right in others life.

I discuss this topic a lot. Marriage is a means to an end but it may not involve what is best in life. It is not that means are bad, but means may be devoid of affection. How many people live in dead routines where discovery of deeper affection becomes impossible. Much of what motivates people into marriage is fear; practical fear, fear of being alone, fear of being stepping outside the norm etc. these are terrible reasons for marriage.

The interdependence required to seek what is best in life goes deeper than security and satisfaction of desire. The reason why is because self defensive motives rest on fear and create a sense of terrible isolation due to strategic manipulating and treating any lover as an opponent. This is competitive and often deceitful.

Companionship is necessary. It's just part of human nature. Marriage is society made. Some people go decades without marrying, but are still happy.
