This Japanese anime focuses on the classic sci-fi struggle between man and machine. The huge new building complex, the Ziggurat, towers over Metropolis and people are extremely curious about what's going on inside. Dr. Laughton (Junpei Takeguchi) is building the ultimate humanoid - Tima (Yuka Imoto), for the head of Ziggurat, Duke Red (Jamieson Price). She will be used to gain control over the entire city. Duke's adopted son, Rock (Kouki Okada), is jealous of the affection his father has for Tima (she's fashioned in the image of Duke's dead daughter) and tries to destroy her.
Detective Shunsaku Ban (Kousei Tomita) and Kenichi (Kei Kobayashi) are given a robot-tracker, called Pero (Dave Mallow), and are on assignment to find Dr. Laughton. On the run from Rock, Kenichi and Tima find themselves alone together as their path takes them to the subterranean levels of the city - the more time they spend together, they begin to trust one another (maybe even to fall in love). Then Tima finds out she's a robot and her inner struggle will determine the fate of Metropolis. In the meantime, unlawful radiation experiments are causing the robots to leave their appropriate sectors and "endanger the public" - the Malduks (the robot police) are using this as an excuse to destroy all the robots. The final conflict is at hand...
The background animation is so amazingly detailed, it may be the best animated city ever created. It's a dazzling feast for the eyes and so much is happening in the crowd scenes, you can't take it all in.
On the flip side, the people are drawn in the anime tradition with not nearly as much detail. The hero Kenichi and the humanoid Tima look especially out of place with their child-like faces and overly large eyes. Compared to the backgrounds, they looked like they were dropped into the wrong cartoon.
The story is a complex one (didn't even try to explain the rebel forces led by Atlas, or the President's political subplots), but if you get lost, you can just look at the pretty pictures.
