Need help to adopt a child from Hyderabad

Hi friends,

I am an NRI from Hyderabad currently in US. Me and my wife are planning to adopt an orphan kid from hyderabad. We already have a kid. We are planning to go to India after 2 months from now for one month. Basically we are planning to adopt a child (who is really an orphan) from an orphan home. I need help regarding adopting a kid:

1) How do we find about orphan homes who give kids for adoption (Are there websites/contacts) ?

2) Since we plan to stay in India for one month, can we finish off this process of adopting and getting the kid a dependent VISA in one month?

3) If we have to adopt, What is the procedure to adopt a kid in India?

4) Does the adopted kid need a Dependent VISA or any special VISA?

5) We are planning to adopt a child who has the same age as our kid (2 years old). Are there any restrictions on age ?

6) How much does it cost for the procedure(s) (not for raising the kid)?

7) I read in newspapers before that there are scams in adoption. What are the issues that I need to take care of so that I will not be part of a scam or will not be cheated?

Kindly help me and answer as many questions as possible. You are free to give answers to questions and issues that I may not have posed here and you feel that I need to take care of.

i commend for this noble step in adopting an orphan. as of now i do not know the answers to your questions, but i will try to find out n get back to u.

a request: please adopt a girl child. many heartless bastards abandon them and they end up in orphanages.

Hey there,

Me dunno too many details about adopting a child, but i'd like to chip in here. Have a cousin who adopted a child aroud 5 years ago. Now they are a happy little family living in London. Having said that, you go ahead with your plans. Try not worrying too much about scams, red-tape and the like. Wish you all the best!

Hi Cool_guyfh, it is commendable that you and your wife are considering adoption as an alternative to grow your family! I myself was considering that when I get to that stage.

Some points to consider:

1. Any person entering the US who is not natural born needs a VISA and that includes your case. Getting a VISA for your child is and can be a lengthy process...depending on the age of the child. The younger he/she is, I am guessing the faster it is. Two years sounds an ok age.

(Warning: I can assure you that adoption is not a one month process!) Plus , this is not something you want to rush into!

2. The best bet is talking to a lawyer here. Know of all the paperwork you have to fill out etc and start the process of records here. Be familiar with your state's law (and national) regarding bringing an adopted child.

2.1 When you are in India, you should be in contact with a lawyer that specializes in this field. You need a valid India Passport for the child to travel.

2.2 As to scams, the best preventive action is research, research, and research! I would suggest researching agencies that are certified and licensed by the Indian and Andhra state government.

4. When you have completed the legal process, make sure that the child has the proper medical records etc. and all the tiny details I am sure you will learn of in the process.

5. Do not be discouraged at any roadblocks you might face, know that there is a deserving child at the end of that road.

Hey Jaan,

I am a single woman and I want to adopt an orphan of age 6 months to 1 year. Am I eligible to adopt? I went thru a few sites on adoption but most of them are suitable for NRIs looking for adoption.

If you ever find any site which talks about adoption by resident Indians, do post it here.

I could get the list of govt approved agencies and very soon I will be contacting one of them.

If anyone of you have heard of an baby left behind or an orphan baby do let me know. Will there be any hassels adopting a such a baby?
