there goes another well-meaning thread.. ^^

to me, any kind of negative discrimination is wrong. An individual should be judged by his character rather than his color. as far as society accepting everything goes, its a slooooooow process.. any kind of change takes time.

hey, thanks CAD, for pointing me in the direction of this. how the hell did i miss it?

we all have prejudices, anyone who says they have none is either a liar, or not very self-analylitical. The real crime is when we let these prejudices make decisions for us, such as when hiring/firing an employee, passing a law, or starting a holy war against a middle eastern country.

On the subject of racial tags, context is everything. I've got friends in the UK who call me Paddy (common irish name, a bit like calling a Sikh "Sardar" even if that's not his name) in an affectionate way, however I've heard some people sneer the term "African American" in a way that makes their meaning very clear.

Zodiac-discrimination is something I havent heard of before. Hmmm, I guess some really cautious and superstitious women (and men) follow that.

Back to square one, My first reply any reference is bad.

Be it calling a muslim paki in India or Nigger.

It always is a sensitive issue and should be avoided. my only point earlier was if two ppl are talking and do not know the person all to gether, then a description maybe fine, again it need not be derogatory.

I agree with the general line of thought on the thread. Negative discrimination on the basis of caste/creed/sex/religion/sexual preferences or for that matter anything that's beyond the individual's control is bad.

But I don't think personal comments should be considered in the same league as discrimination. If I call someone stupid, it's not because the person is a muslim or a sikh or a gay or a taurean, but because I find him stupid.

i kinda agree with u, but one point, which could as well be the main point of ur arguement i disagree with is, if a person is stupid, there is no harm in calling him stupid, but if a person is stupid, its not a good thing calling him gay. just like, if a person is a terrorist, its fine calling him a terrorist, but if the same person is muslim, i think it would a big mistake calling him muslim., cos knowingly or unknowingly, we are accusing all the muslims who are nt terrorists.

well, this is just an example.

Exactly what I said....with a small quirk though. Calling a terrorist a muslim won't be wrong if he is a muslim....inspite of his profession, he still remains a follower of that religion....I feel I was wrong though in terming them muslim terrorists. My bad...but it wasn't a prejudice...It was more of colloquial lingo.
