Telugu Story

by HH » Mon Jan 17, 2005 4:58 pm

On Reading a Telugu Story:

* My friends and readers often ask me why I am so keen on choosing stories from the past four or five decades as opposed to the contemporary fiction.

# Among the characteristics appropriate for creative expression, dhwani (suggestion) and vakrokti (indirect communication) have been valued high in Sanskrit aesthetics. U.R. Anantha Murthy, once mentioned at a South Asian Conference in the early 1980s that suggestion was the soul of poetry and indirect communication the sole way to communion. I believe that is true of fiction too. Suggestion and indirect communication help the author’s view to make a lasting impression on the reader’s mind. Additionally, or rather based on the traditional system, Telugu writers for centuries exercised freedom to some extent. Writer was a despot (nirankuso kavayah), free to write what he wanted to write about and in a form and language he deemed fit. In the process, he also allowed the reader the same freedom, and provided a venue to interpret, build on and, even to create a new story. In other words, the author would provoke the reader into thinking in his own way.

# This freedom for the writers continued well into the fifties and sixties. In recent times, many Telugu writers are anxious to adapt to the western mode of thinking and fit into a formula—a specific type of hero, a particular kind of problem, and an almost predictable ending. Unlike in the past, the magazine editors and publishers are dictating the terms, and even modifying the text submitted for publication.

# The technique of story telling is peculiar to writer. No two persons talk alike and no two writers tell the same story in the same words. And possibly no two readers appreciate the same story and grasp the same message. That is the reason we have so many stories on the same topic. Each writer presents a new perspective and adds to the commonality of understanding.
For all these reasons, I feel that the stories of past decades reflect our culture better than the present day writing.

# In this issue, each story invokes a sense of moral outrage in the reader. In “The Soul Wills it” (Viswanatha Satyanarayana), the woman, who was subjected to enormous suffering; in the “Royal Fighter” (Munipalle Raju), the senior fighter who was humiliated by the prince; the self-exile of Ramanna thatha, for all the sacrifice he had made for his country in “Lifesaver” (Poranki Dakshinamurthy); in “Her Personality” (Tripuraneni Gopichand), the knight errant who was anxious to protect the woman’s honor; and, in “Lodestar” (Somireddy Jayaprada), the young boy who was beat up by his father simply because he wanted to learn to read—they all anger the readers on some level.

I agree with u completely HH bhai.

If we really want to know abt the telugu culture and the actual and rich traditions of ours, it has to be the books 40-50 yrs back.

Even though movies too depict a few things, it can complement books not substitute them.

Stream of momentous lyrics - Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry

by HH » Sat Jan 29, 2005 1:36 pm

Stream of Momentous Lyrics - Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry

'Viranchinai virachinchithini ee kavanam, vipanchi nai vinipinchithini ee geetham' - these words are appropriate for the eminent lyricist, who himself had penned down these lyrics. Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry, prominently known as 'Sirivennela', is the real Viranchi of tinsel world, who delivers amazing lyrics from his pen.

At a time, when the lyrics of telugu film songs were stooping down beyond recognition with poor lyrics, telugu film industry found a versatile poet in the form of Sri.Seetha Rama Sastry. His lyrics are so profound that one can never stop digging out the essence of those verses.

'banda raallanu chirayuvuluga jeevinchamani anathichina vadinedi adigedi' - when the character mocks at the God, in the song 'adibhikshuvu vadinedi koredi, boodidichevadinedi adigedi' , Sirivennela showered the mockery in a soothing style.

'aluperugani ataladu vasanthalu valadante viri vanamula parimalamula viluvemundi' - when the character expresses her desire for freedom from forceful materialistic life, in the song 'ghallu ghallu ghallu mantu merupalle trullu', he delivered the innocent feelings of a ambitious girl who strives for minimum worldly pleasures.

'bhadram be careful brother, barthaga maraku bachelor, shadi mate voddu guru, solo brathuke so better' - a simple song with lot of humour.

‘chakravarthiki veedhi bichagatheki bandhuvavuthanani andi money’ – another simple song with deep meaning.

'kunuku raka butta bomma digulugundani, vanamule lechi vachi nidra buchani' - a beautiful lullaby for the heroine by the hero, trying to drive away her fear and worry, in the song 'jamu rathiri jabilamma' .

‘taralirada tane vasantham, tana dariki rani vanala kosam', ‘eto vellipoindi manasu ila vontaraindi vayasu' ,’evaraina epudaina sariga gamaninchara, chali chera asaleppudu vadilindo’,'ne tolisariga kalagannadi ninne kada', if I go on, this list will be too lengthy. Each and every song of his has its own connotation.

He maintains the rhyme, rhythm and essence in all his lyrics that makes him a distinguished lyricist of the era. He uses an amalgamation of both complex and simple telugu in his lyrics, that makes them more popular among telugu people. I think, it is needless to mention that Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry is one of the rare lyricists in the present generation who could be on par with yester years great lyricists of our telugu film industry. Endaro mahanubhavulu, andariki vandanamulu.

Another favorite of mine is the following song from rudra veena.. Incidentally, ilayaraja composed the music for this song too :) vocals are by SPB

chuttu pakkala choodara chinnavaada

chukkallo choopu chikkukunnavaada

kalla mundhu katika nijam.. kaana leni guddi japam

saadhinchadhu ye paramaartham.. brathukunu kaaneyaku vyartham

swargalanu andhukonaalani.. vadigaa gudi metlekkevu

saati manishi vedhana choosthu..jaali leni silavayinaavu

karunanu maripinchedhaa.. chadhuvu samskaaram ante

gunde bandaga maarchedhaa.. saampradhayam ante

nuvvu thine prathi oka methuku.. ee sangham pandinchidhi

garvinche ee nee brathuku.. ee samajame valachindi

runam theerchu tharunam vasthe.. thappinchuku pothunnaava

As clear the expressions are, as lucid the language is and as interesting the concepts are - they are all dubbed songs, with concepts, ideas and thoughts finding their origins in the original language, tamizh in this case.

Welcome to the interesting, and often times looked down, art form of dubbing.

Dubbing does not consist in reproduction of the language. Dubbing does not merely involve finding a suitable match to the original term. Dubbing is not a mere refit or resize!

"navayuga kavi cakravarti" gurraM jaashuvaa

by HH » Tue Mar 08, 2005 5:39 pm

"navayuga kavi cakravarti" gurraM jaashuvaa

Jashuva's "Gabbilam"

"navayuga kavi cakravarti" gurraM jaashuvaa (G. Joshua) was one of the great telugu poets of this century. With a profound sense of social consciousness, he wrote many "khaMDa kaavyaalu" filled with moving poetry. Though his chosen style of poetry is one of the strict metre, the content of his poetry reflects modern progressive thought.

Jashuva was born in 1895 in Katragaddapadu to Virayya and Lingamma. Because of the intercaste alliance of his parents, their poverty and their caste, Jashuva's childhood was spent in alienation from close relatives, undergoing severe hardships and being subjected to inhuman treatment from the society which considered his caste untouchable. Inspite of these enormous hurdles Jashuva's parents raised him and his brother, Israel, as good Christians. Jashuva persevered against these hardships and graduated with Ubhaya Bhasha Praveena (scholar of Telugu and Sanskrit languages).

Inspite of being raised a Christian, Jashuva often drew his inspiration from Hinduism and Hindu mythological epics. This angered his Christian society, which was quick to proscribe Jashuva's family from their community. This did not deter Jashuva who continued to write excellent poetry in telugu. He was a school teacher initially, but lost his first job. During this period of unemployment, he continued to put out wonderful
poetry.

It pained his sensitive heart however that, scholars of "high caste" would appreciatehis poetry and sing praises of it, then come to know of his caste and leave in disgust.

But the brilliance of his poetry, shone through the feeble attempts of society to cover it. He was recognized by literature and poetry lovers. He was employed again. Publishers came forward to publish his works. He received great acclaim and many accolades from far and near. His shining glory (he says) was when the eminent poet and scholar Chellapilla Venkata Sastry (half of the "tirupati vEMkaTa kavulu" duo), a Brahmin, touched his ("an untouchable's") feet to adorn his ankle with the "Ganda Penderam" and proclaimed:"I am honoured to have touched the feet of this great poet".

Jashuva's many works include "Gabbilam", arguably his most famous work, fashioned after Kalidasa's Megha Sandesam. In "Gabbilam", however, it is not a yaksha using the cloud as a messenger to convey his longing to his loved one; instead [i[it is a hunger and poverty stricken "daridra naaraayaNuDu" requesting a "bat" visiting him from a nearby Siva temple, on a sleepless night, to convey his prayers[/i] to "kaaSee viSvanaatha" and "viSaalaakshi annapoorNa". As Arudra comments, "the yaksha suffered for only one year, but the protagonist of gabbilaM is carrying on the curse from his previous lives - the curse of untouchability". And Jashuva's hero in gabbilam remains a bachelor so as not to pass on this curse to his offspring! He muses at the irony of his situation, where a bat is allowed inside a temple but not a human being! He cautions the bat to convey his message to Siva as it hangs from the roof close to his ear, at a time when the "poojaari" is not around, because often "dEvuDu varamiccinaa -- poojaari varamiyyaDu". Thus in several entreaties, he begs the "sage bird" to fly over the various landmarks of India to Kashi to convey his anguish to the Lord Siva.

This remarkable work, supposedly the favorite of even Jashuva, overflows with pathos (which appears to be the predominant emotion in many of Jashuva's works). Even in such a work, Jashuva weaves in his other favorite emotion, "patriotism" as he describes the various historic places the bird will fly over enroute to Lord Siva in Kashi. He even takes the bird on detours, on occasion, to visit some historic place of pride for Indians.
