Recently discovered these discussion boards. And have been lapping up the contents of it. They make for very appealing read, masalas as varied as that of the Hyderabadi Biryani.

Some posts like this take me back through the gulleys of the old buried memories.

Names of the patangs - does anybody have descriptions as well? I wasn't a discerning kite flier as some others on this site...

Also wondering, what other material makes for a good kite, other than our trusted old kite paper.

Here are some that I remember (shapes are tricky - anyways ...)

Zibiya (or was it zebra) - has a 'U' at the top (facing sky) or namam

Langot - has a patch at the bottom (facing ground)

par par - Disabled kite (torn at the bottom - but flyable - cheapskates like me - would know about this )

Akil appears to be still in the know -

I used to order both patangs and Maanja from Babulal at Gulzar houz (it is street between Madina and charminar (on the left going towards charminar - besides jewellery shops)).

attambaaj - If you hijack (for want of better term) other kite (basically pench gone bad (stalemate) and one of the guys end up getting it)

Murkha bhi nahi dekha - pench ending as it began

Bomma kannal - Kanne so wide apart and proportional that the kite stays still (not good for pench) - also called wajandar - because it is heavy.

Landoori - Is used to try and get out a kataa hua patang which is stuck at some height, usually on trees...

Maanja Riggi thinnadi - Means that the manja is spoilt at some places due to wear and tear and might break easily.

:D

When I was a kid I used to use a thick thread and try to snatch others kite and maanja while involving in a phench. The term for this is lootmar I guess.

Many strategies were involved in this process, like lootmar only patangs that are flying from a very faroff place, so that the guy who lost his patang cannot locate you and you will be saved from a few kicks :D

Lippuk - a patang is called lippuk if the stick tht goes goes accross is too week and when flown the patang turns looks like a dubla patla person.

Dancer - if the patang keeps moving back and forth when u try to pull the string

giti (geeti) - the standard measure for the length of manja. (exactly how much one geeti is equal to however, is unknown and varies from vendor to vendor)

more later...
