I fully agree with you that social services too should be covered under the ambit of laws and morality. But I have a query of my own. What is the responsibility of the elected government. Long ago, I remember reading that the government is the elected representative of the people which undertakes to provide them with all the basic necessities of social existance. In return, the so-called \'governers\' are vested with powers to make decisions. If this were true, there should have been no need for NGO\'s. The govt should have eliminated poverty, checked unemployment and assured its citizens better and more fulfilling lives. But that has not happened. When the system itself is corrupt and innefficient, what can be expected of NGO\'s. This is not an inflamatory message asking one and all to rise up against the system and to take the law into their own hands. This is merely a query as to what you really mean. Are you against the establishment of NGO\'s? Or are you suggesting that the govt is better equipped to handle welfare activities? Please answer this before we indulge in further discussion.

That the government should eradicate unemployment, poverty etc. etc. is a very \"Nehruvian Socialist\" kind of attitude that has resulted in the mess we find ourselves in today. It is this kind of \"govt should take care of everything\" attitude that resulted in PSUs that are bleeding our economy to death. The government should really create an environment that is conducive to the business, where it is difficult to flout the law as many in us are wont to do, provide for defence, education for all etc. Our licence raj has pretty much obliterated a breed of enterpreneurs.

Hey Murali, I enjoy your rejoinders! It has been quite some time since I have heard anyone call my thinking Nehruvian Socialism! I have always been considered revolutionary marxist in my approach. N e way, getting back to the point, you are right about the reasons for the mess we find ourselves in. The PSU’s are bleeding our economy to death. But throwing things on the government is not going to solve the problem. In fact, I could go as far as to say that the government is responsible for the mess we are in. It is ‘by the people, for the people, of the people’ remember.
When those in power are those without ethics, morals or scruples, what can be expected. Can honest enterprise survive in such a stifling atmosphere? And as regards flouting the law, who will police the police? Is there such a mechaniosm in place? Or is transparency and answerability the key?
