HIV test must before marriage

by Kulcha Hyderabadi » Sun Sep 15, 2002 1:04 pm

With the State showing an alarming incidence of AIDS, the government is considering a proposal to enact a legislation to make HIV testing mandatory for both bride and bridegroom before marriage (Deccan Chronicle 15 September). A step in the right direction? Will it help in combating or curtaling the problem? What about personal rights and liberties? etc. etc. So folks what do you think about this proposed legislation?

HIV test must before marriage

this test shoud be for the reasons as below 1)if one partner is infected with HIV the other partner will surely get AIDS.2)then the child will also definitely get AIDS(trans placental-vertical transmission). So to protect both the counterpart and the child this test may be compulsary. But in village and uneducated areas people may get infected becuse of unhygienic barber shop procedures (hair cutting)and blood tranfusion and even intravenous route drug administrations. So HIV may be infected because of nonsex factors also as told above. The poor innocent villager if comes to know that he is infected with AIDS he may get suicide.BUT IN GENERAL IT IS BETTER TO DO PREVENTIVE HIV TEST BEFORE MARRIAGE. But who does now a days? Who cares now a days MrKul?

I donno how much they charge for aids test, but if it applies then definately this will boost up the business and burden for the testing laboratories. Its a good measure provided it should be strictly applied, but there are few other things also to be considered like for people who found this virus and can\'t marry will try to find someother way to ., and that also will be dangerous. But for the new couples , it seems like visiting to court or prison to proove that they are not criminal.

Could be a measure to control the spread of the disease. The problem still remains as this would not make some immune to disease as such one could get infected after marriage and then ????????????? Anyway a good step and it might open ways for control in a more better way.

I guess it is a first step in right direction atleast innocent women can be saved from unfaithfuly hubbies!!!! for one. Secondly, an individual\'s life can be saved (whether boy or girl) b4 marriage if it really becomes mandatory to have this test provided, the reports of analysis are correct and not tainted.

Well, I have a different perspective. World has witnessed the worst of this HIV and AIDS and I must say that we are lucky that we are not the front line nations. There is enough data and information from the worst effected nations in Africa and also some information from the west to how to act as an individual and also as a community or a nation to tackle this problem. In some countries like Botswana, Mozambique and some communities in South Africa, 50% of the children are expected to dye before they reach 14 years of age. BTW, all these kids acquired the disease from their parents. Do you know what does this mean to those nations? They lost almost an entire generation and they won’t be having any working generation to replace the present working generation. What do you think the economic prospects of this country would be? Forget about the costly medicines, they don’t even have food to eat. This epidemic has to be stopped in India at any cost. The strength of the epidemic lies in the rate of it’s spread. By hook or crook, we need to stop it. If anyone feels that this new enforcement from the government is an invasion of privacy or violation of personal liberty, then there is no other way to voluntarily disclose the disease. BTW, most of them don’t even know that they are the carriers. If someone doesn’t want to take the test and still be a part of the epidemic then he must be prosecuted along with his/her partner along with the baby if any for being a national menace. If not the AIDS will eat up the whole country.

MORE BOYFRIENDS MORE GIRLFRIENDS are developing .As your statement think whether THIS FRIENDS PRACTICE has to be restricted? the only solution is starting sex education at school level. so then teen age sex will be protected from HIV.

a country, where child marriages, etc..etc...... are such a common custom, a HIV test before marriage, is ....., hey man you are in a illusion.....talkin \'bt the realities, the Indians are so corrupt all the time, i think such a mandatory, testing will result in probably spreading the virus to the healthy one\'s, c\'mon, some corrupt medical officer will definitely eat away the money which was allocated to procure the syringe stuff.......so.......better the govt do not initiate any such thing, as the people in that country {india) by large SUCK.....

It sounds like a good idea to me, but it seems very difficult to implement. All the messages posted here have a doubt about the implementation part rather than any thing else. Many infectious diseases like TB are mandatory reported to the Health Authorities. So is the case with HIV+. Now testing before marriage is proposed as mandatory. This will help protect innocent victims of HIV. The sooner we start the better. This will surely act as a deterrent for those who want to be careless and promiscuous. In turn it can help lower the incidence of other Sexually Transmitted Diseases too.
